â€Å"Consider the postage stamp, advised humorist Josh Billings. Its usefulness consists in the ability to stick to one thing until it gets there.† The same might be said about an effective paragraph. Unity is the quality of sticking to one idea from start to finish, with every sentence contributing to the central purpose and main idea of that paragraph. A​  topic sentence contains the main idea upon which a paragraph is developed. In a unified paragraph, all the supporting sentences serve to illustrate, clarify, and/or explain the main idea set forth in the topic sentence. The best way to demonstrate the importance of unity is to show how the intrusion of irrelevant information can disrupt our understanding of a paragraph. The original version of the following passage, taken from The Names: A Memoir, by N. Scott Momaday, vividly illustrates how people in the Pueblo of Jemez in New Mexico prepare for the Feast of San Diego. Weve upset the unity of Momadays paragraph by adding one sentence thats not directly connected to his main idea. See if you can spot that sentence. The activity in the pueblo reached a peak on the day before the Feast of San Diego, November twelfth. It was on that day, an especially brilliant day in which the winter held off and the sun shone like a flare, that Jemez became one of the fabulous cities of the world. In the preceding days the women had plastered the houses, many of them, and they were clean and beautiful like bone in the high light; the strings of chilies at the vigas had darkened a little and taken on a deeper, softer sheen; ears of colored corn were strung at the doors, and fresh cedar boughs were laid about, setting a whole, wild fragrance on the air. Thomas poem Snow is a completely different concept to the other two poems as a result of the whole poem being a metaphor. This is owing to the snow being portrayed as the birds feathers. There is sign of alliteration though, where Silence of snow is used to describe the snow as a silencer. There is no consistent rhyme scheme to the poem whereas there is in the other two poems. All three of the poems have a contrasting structure. Bridges structure is a thirty seven line poem with three line stanzas and a total of four sentences are used throughout the poem. Apart from the beginning and the end of the poem, every third line is indented. Hardy, however, has used four verses and where the first contains eight lines and the other three contain four lines. There are four sentences just as in Bridges poem. Thomas poem is an eight line verse and contains two sentences throughout the poem rather than the four that Bridges and Hardy used. In conclusion, I feel Robert Bridges has effectively created the snowy scene in his poem London Snow. I believe the detail of the description he has used has worked effectively as it portrays a magical Impression of the snow. Bridges uses a variety of adjectives and verbs to describe the snow and how it can transform a scene; Stifling, Incessantly, and Silently sifting are a few examples of adjectives used to describe the scene. Bridges creates many ideas and messaged to do with the snow such as how at first it can be magical and pure but it can then be ruined by people walking on it. I feel this portrays the snowy scene well and depicts exactly what happens owing to the snow being uncontrollable. The fact that Bridges has used many poetic techniques makes his poem effective. He uses a number of alliterative phrases including Silently Sifting which describes the snows silencing effect. Furthermore, he uses metaphors, onomatopoeia and personification. Therefore after assessing all three poems, I have reached the conclusion that Robert Bridges poem London Snow is the most effective in creating the snowy scene.

Wuthering Heights Essays - British Films, English-language Films Wuthering Heights I would like to analyze the conflicts that Heathcliff faced throughout the novel Wuthering Heights. Heithcliffs character was very complex. He lived a troubled childhood that is never completely revealed to the reader. All we know is that he was abandoned at a young age and when Mr. Earnshaw discovered him, he was sickly looking. Heathclfidd was then brought to live in this brand new society at Wuthering Heights. Hindly, Mr. Earnshaws son, was jealous of Heathcliff from the start because he felt that his father loved Heathcliff more than himself. Hindlys hatred for Heathcliff was worsened once he realized that he and Cathy had fallen in love. To protect his sister, he slowly turned Heathcliff into a vagabond. This ultimatly forced her to seek love elsewhere. When Heathcliff overheard that Cathy was to be married to another man, Edgar, he ran away from Wuthering Heights. After fleeing Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff was forced to start a new life and obviously succeeded at this because during this time he became very wealthy. Upon returning he confessed to Cathy that he never stopped loving her. When Cathy didnt reciprocate his feelings, Heathcliff became enraged and to spite Cathy, he married her sister in law, Isabelle. At this point Cathy and her husband Edgar were expecting a baby. Heathcliffs marriage sent her into a deep depression. She fell very ill and soon after giving birth to her daughter, Cathrine , she died. Berfore she died though, she confessed to Heathcliff her true love for him. After Cathys death, Heathcliff now became a scornful person, full of hatred. He wanted in the worst way to get revenge on Edgar Linton for stealing Cathy from him. He spent years and years thinking up a valid plan that would drive Edgar to his deathbed. His plan uses Cathrines cousin, Linton, to lure her to Wuthering Heights against her fathers will. When she arrives, Heathcliffs new revengeful side is now revealed. He locks Cathrine up in the house and forces her to marry Linton. When she is finally free to visit her father, Heathcliffs wish is now granted. Her father, Edgar, lies on a deathbed, and dies shortly after Cathrines return. Now Edgars fortune belongs to Linton who as according to Heathcliffs plan dies soon after their marriage. Edgars fortune is now passed on from Linton to Heathcliff. Heathcliffs life persists accordingly for a while until Mr. Lockwood, a new tenant at Wuthering Heights, ariives. He stays in Cathys old room against Heathcliffs orders and during the night gets a visit from her ghost which he immidiatly reports to Heathcliff. This encounter makes Heathcliff realize that Cathy is waiting for him in heavon. Now that he had seen Edgar die and had stolen his fortune from him, he was ready to join Cathy. From this point on he welcomes death and yearns for his and Cathys reunion. Heathcliffs death comes abruptly and the only person to mourn his death is Hareton, his nephew. Heathcliff lived most of his life as a victim, but I think that all of his hardships turned him into a stronger person. Unfortunatly, he not only became hard, but lost all the tenderness in his heart. Over time, he enjoyed seeing people endure pain as he himself was forced to do so many times in his past. The ultimate thing that brought Heathcliff to peace was to die and enter heavon where his beloved Cathy was. Now that they are both in heavon it seems as if Heathcliffs wishes have come true because at the end of the novel, someone comments on seeing Heathcliffs ghost with a woman. That woman is presumably Cathy. Their love was obviously an undying love because even in death they found a way to be together.
